Experience. Expertise. Choice. The Nations Trust Bank Cards Story

For more than two decades, Nations Trust Bank has been at the forefront of transforming how Sri Lankans pay, spend, and experience premium banking. Today, with a portfolio spanning American Express, Mastercard, and soon Visa, the Bank stands uniquely positioned to deliver unparalleled choice and value to customers. Niluka Gunatilake, Senior Vice President - Cards & Consumer Assets at Nations Trust Bank, discusses the Bank’s market leadership in cards, its premium banking expertise, and what lies ahead for the future of payments.

Q1: Nations Trust Bank has remained the leader in Sri Lanka’s cards industry for many years. What has driven this sustained success?

Sustaining market leadership since 2018 in an increasingly competitive market is a reflection of the strength of our cards franchise, the trust customers place in us and our ability to continuously evolve with their needs. Over the years, NTB has built one of the most experienced and diversified cards businesses in Sri Lanka. While we have long been recognised for our strength in the American Express space, we have also significantly expanded our Mastercard portfolio, particularly within the affluent and premium segments, enabling us to offer customers greater choice across different lifestyles and spending preferences. A good example is our Nations Trust Bank Private Banking Mastercard proposition, which complements our premium portfolio and reflects our focus on delivering differentiated solutions for affluent and high-value customer segments. Today, NTB offers one of the most comprehensive cards portfolios in the market, spanning credit cards, debit cards, corporate cards, travel cards and fuel cards. This breadth enables us to support a wide range of consumer and business payment needs through a single integrated cards ecosystem. As we continue to expand our portfolio with the future introduction of Visa, we are further strengthening customer choice and enhancing access to the world's leading payment networks through a single trusted banking partner. Our leadership position is built on more than market share. It is built on experience, expertise and our ability to match customers with the payment solutions that best suit their lifestyles, aspirations and needs.

Q2: What has enabled NTB to establish such a strong leadership position in the premium cards space?

Premium banking is not simply about offering premium cards. It is about having industry knowledge, experience, and global partnerships to deliver a truly world-class proposition. For more than 23 years, NTB has done exactly that through its partnership with American Express, building one of the strongest premium cards franchises in Sri Lanka.Over the years, this partnership has enabled us to develop deep expertise in serving affluent and high-net-worth customer segments while consistently delivering the standards, benefits and service associated with a globally recognised premium brand. We hold the exclusive rights to issue the American Express premium Centurion line cards in Sri Lanka, enabling eligible customers to access the same globally recognised products, privileges and experiences available in leading markets around the world. NTB played a defining role in elevating the premium cards landscape in Sri Lanka through the introduction of the American Express Platinum Reserve Metal Card. As a top-tier global American Express proposition, it brought a new level of premium card membership to the local market and became the first metal card launched in Sri Lanka. More importantly, it continues to set the benchmark in the premium cards space and remains the most premium card proposition available in the Sri Lankan banking industry today at the same time, we continue to evolve our premium portfolio to meet changing customer expectations through innovations such as the American Express Magnet Card, designed for the next generation of consumers. Combined with our continued focus on innovation, this heritage, exclusivity and depth of expertise have established NTB as one of Sri Lanka's most experienced and trusted premium cards franchises.

Q3 : How has NTB strengthened its overall cards proposition following the acquisition of HSBC’s retail banking portfolio?

NTB entered the acquisition from a position of strength as the market leader in the cards industry. The integration of HSBC Sri Lanka's retail banking portfolio further strengthened that position by expanding the scale of our cards franchise. The coming together of the market's number one and number two cards franchises created a substantial combined market presence, reinforcing NTB's position at the forefront of Sri Lanka's cards industry while expanding the breadth of expertise, capabilities and customer segments within our franchise. Beyond scale, the acquisition further enhanced the diversity of our overall portfolio and strengthened our ability to serve a wider range of customer needs across both consumer and business segments. Most importantly, it strengthened an already robust cards ecosystem, combining greater scale with broader capabilities while preserving the service standards, expertise and customer focus that have long defined the NTB Cards franchise.

Q4: What is your vision for the future of NTB Cards?

Our vision is to continue shaping the future of payments in Sri Lanka by building on the leadership position, expertise and customer trust that we have established over many years. The cards landscape continues to evolve rapidly, with customers seeking greater convenience, personalisation, security and choice in how they transact. Our focus is therefore not only on expanding our portfolio, but also on continuously enhancing the value, experiences and capabilities we bring to cardmembers. With strengths across American Express and Mastercard, and the future addition of Visa, we are well positioned to offer customers access to the world's leading payment networks through a single trusted banking partner. At the same time, we will continue to strengthen our propositions across premium, affluent and corporate segments through solutions and experiences that remain relevant to evolving customer needs. Ultimately, our focus is to continue setting the benchmark in Sri Lanka's cards industry by combining global payment networks, market-leading propositions and deep cards expertise. Our strength lies not only in the breadth of our portfolio, but also in our deep understanding of each customer’s preferences, life cycle stages and behaviour, enabling us to recommend the card proposition best suited to their lifestyle and aspirations.
